Grace Periods Are Ending Soon
Many borrowers who graduated from college or career/trade school this past spring were given a grace period before they’re required to make payments on their federal student loans.
The six-month grace period for borrowers with Direct Subsidized Loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loans, and graduate student PLUS loans is ending soon. There are options available to help borrowers stay on track, and we encourage you to share these options with those who may be struggling to make monthly payments:

Update on 2025–26 FAFSA® Beta
The first phase of the 2025–26 FAFSA beta recently ended, and we surpassed our goal to recruit 100 students to complete the form. Across the country, our department staff partnered with local organizations such as Alabama Possible, the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara, and Education is Freedom to achieve over 680 students successfully submitting FAFSA forms!
Beta 2 began on Oct. 15 and includes students from diverse populations to test unique FAFSA form use cases. Students with different family configurations, income levels, education history, locations, and backgrounds were invited to participate.
Progress updates about FAFSA beta will continue to be posted. We encourage you to share this information within your network!

2025–26 FAFSA® Prototype Available
Interested in seeing the new FAFSA form for yourself? The FAFSA prototype offers you an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the 2025–26 FAFSA form.
• |
The prototype is not the final 2025–26 FAFSA form on fafsa.gov. Instead, it's a tool to explore scenarios future applicants will face.
|
• |
Users can start or finish an application as a student, parent, or spouse. Soon, we will add scenarios for correcting common mistakes.
|
• |
This prototype isn't the same as the demo site. It's meant to help understand the applicant experience. The actual form is still being developed and might differ slightly from the prototype. Updates will be made to keep the prototype in line with the actual form.

Resources for Those Affected by Hurricanes
We’re here to support those who have recently experienced hardship from the damage done by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton.
Current students and federal student loan borrowers who have been impacted by a federally declared natural disaster should visit StudentAid.gov/naturaldisaster for guidance and support. There are options available for borrowers, such as a natural disaster forbearance, if they are having trouble making payments.
